GitHub Copilot SDK
Embed Copilot's CLI agent runtime in your own applications.
Documentation reviewed
Can I use this for my work?
GitHub Copilot SDK embeds the Copilot CLI agent runtime in applications. The current README marks the SDK generally available; ASE has not established its first GA date.
- Availability
- Generally available. SDK GA per current README. The separate Microsoft Copilot harness in Foundry was announced in public preview October 28; hosted-agent resilience GA does not make that harness GA.
- How to use it
- Library / CLI. TypeScript/Node.js, Python, .NET, Go, Java and Rust clients. Node.js, Python and .NET bundle the CLI; Go, Java and Rust need manual CLI setup or supported language-specific bundling.
- Processing and data
- Local and cloud options. The SDK talks to a CLI server over JSON-RPC; model and connected-tool processing depends on configuration. Local SDK execution does not establish offline inference. Scope tools and permissions before enabling actions.
- Costs and limits
- MIT SDK; Copilot allowances or BYOK/provider costs
- Outputs
- Programmatic agent sessions, tool calls and file/code edits in your own application. Distinct from the GitHub Copilot end-user product and Strands' harness-sdk.
Standard use requires Copilot access, including a limited Free tier; supported bring-your-own-key routes use provider credentials instead. Prompts consume allowances or provider usage. MIT covers SDK code, not unlimited models, tools or hosting. No installation or runtime test was performed.

Developers embedding configurable agent sessions and tool workflows into an application.
You want a ready-made end-user assistant or assume MIT code includes unlimited model and tool usage.
About GitHub Copilot SDK
GitHub Copilot SDK provides language clients for Copilot's CLI agent runtime. The SDK is GA and MIT-licensed, while Copilot allowances, supported BYOK model usage, tools and infrastructure have separate requirements and costs. CLI bundling differs by language. It is separate from the end-user GitHub Copilot product, Strands harness-sdk and the Foundry-managed Copilot harness preview.
