The shortlist
Use a defined source collection when you need to trace an answer back to the material. Notebook study, PDF workspaces and open-web research solve related but different jobs.
Documentation-based starting points, not hands-on benchmarks. Check each option's fit, setup and costs below. Compare them with the same worksheet.
Freemium
Gemini Notebook, formerly NotebookLM, organizes sources for cited questions and study material. Check accepted source types, quotas and account eligibility before uploading a collection.
Capability source ↗— You need unrestricted source uploads, verified factual answers or an offline document assistant.
Paid product
Acrobat AI Assistant and PDF Spaces support questions and summaries across document collections. An eligible AI plan, supported language and region are required; free Reader alone does not establish access.
Capability source ↗— You expect the AI subscription with free Reader alone or require independently verified numerical extraction.
Free access; paid research/model allowances
Perplexity offers cited research and file-based workflows. Distinguish the supplied files from additional web sources, and check the current limits and plan for the chosen research mode.
Capability source ↗— You need auditable control over sources and retrieval — it is a consumer product.
Ask for the passage or page supporting a specific claim, then inspect it. A citation can point to the wrong passage, omit a conflicting source or accompany an incorrect number. Keep the original files, verify tables and calculations, and check upload, sharing and retention terms before using private material.
Check the linked product sources, supported languages, regional availability, permissions and current costs for your actual setup.
